Discussion
As we look at the population numbers in the above table, one thing is glaringly obvious: No matter which column we review, the population numbers have been decreasing in every case.
From 1970 to 2000, Antioch College student population has decreased from 1041 down to 607 – a 42% decrease.
From 1975 to 2000, the In-District YS Public Schools student population has decreased from 960 to 596 – a 38% decrease. Were it not for Open Enrollment transfers into our YS public schools, our school system would be in big trouble.
From 1970 to 2000, the total Yellow Springs population decreased from 4624 down to 3761 – a 19% decrease.
ConclusionsWe are losing significant in-Village population among Antioch College students and Yellow Springs Public Schools K through 12 students – losses in the range of 40% reductions since the 1970-75 time frame. Overall, we have lost 19% of our total Village population from 1970 to 2000. However we look at the data, we’ve lost lots of people from the Village – kids, young adults, and adults.
